Andrés de Urdaneta nació en Ordizia a finales de 1507 o principios de 1508, contra lo que afirman sus biógrafos más antiguos, que lo hacen una década más viejo. Pero él mismo dirime la cuestión en su carta al rey de 28 de mayo de 1560: "y dado que según mi edad que pasa de 52 años".

Resumen:
Este artículo es el resultado de un estudio sobre el grupo de marinos de la Armada de la II República que, tras marchar al exilio en 1939, reemigraron a México. El exilio a México es una emigración tradicionalmente vinculada a personalidades intelectuales. Sin embargo, la mayoría fueron exiliados de a pie y constituye un colectivo poco conocido. Los marinos de la Armada se enmarcan en este grupo y su estudio puede contribuir a una aproximación a esta parte casi olvidada del exilio republicano a México.

Abstract
The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is a Roman period guide to trade and navigation in the Indian Ocean. Justly famous for offering a contemporary and descriptive account of early Indian Ocean trade, the work has been subject to and a point of departure for numerous studies. Its extensive influence on scholarship is, however, also problematic, as it reflects the limited information and cultural and personal bias of its unknown author. Arguably this might have led scholars to overemphasise so-called western or Roman participation in early Indian Ocean trade. The Indian Ocean Trade route was one of the Roman Empire’s most lucrative long-distance trade routes. It was also the vital Roman link to the realms of the Far East, India and China. Each year, the ships laden with Mediterranean commodities would depart Egypt’s Red Sea ports and sail to India, bringing back exotic precious goods, such as spices, gems and silk. Indian Ocean Trade transformed Roman society, allowing the elites and commoners access to never-before-seen luxuries.
