Durante la Edad Media, la Marina catalana figuró en primera línea, en competencia con las marinas de las Señorías de Genova, Venecia y Pisa, y su comercio fue tan importante que la Corona de Aragón tenía cónsules en todos los puertos importantes del Mediterráneo y Mar Negro.
Los reyes de la Corona de Aragón concedieron grandes privilegios a las industrias marítimas, sobre todo a la gente de mar; cerrando los ojos cuando amparándose con las barras de Aragón cometían alguna piratería, lo que era muy frecuente.
