La decisión del John D. Bates, juez del Tribunal de Distrito de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito de Columbia, de rechazar la solicitud de España para suspender un procedimiento de ejecución de un laudo arbitral a favor del fondo británico Blasket Renewable Investments, LLC, abrió ayer la puerta para que el Juan Sebastián Elcano pueda ser embargado una vez que llegue a Nueva York.

El buque escuela de la Armada Española, en el que actualmente sirve la princesa de Asturias como guardamarina, tiene previsto arribar al puerto de Nueva York el 5 de junio de 2025. Permanecerá allí hasta el 10 de junio de 2025.

The tanker that damaged the EstLink 2 undersea cable remains under investigation in Finland. ERR's foreign affairs program "Välisilm" looked into how international maritime law can address the situation and what kind of support can be expected from NATO.

NATO's Standing Naval Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) is a fleet of warships prepared to respond to any threat around the clock. While the group primarily operates in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, it will be seen more frequently in the Baltic in the future — particularly due to incidents like the recent damage to the EstLink 2 cable.

Estonia's defense and foreign ministers said the situaton in the Baltic Sea has become more tense in recent years. Maritime law can hinder sabbotage investigations, but private companies also need to monitor and fix their infastructure, they said.

The Chinese ship Yi Peng 3, suspected of damaging underwater communication cables in the Baltic Sea, left the Danish strait last week. Before its departure, Sweden, Germany, Finland, and Denmark were allowed to inspect the Chinese-flagged vessel, but Swedish authorities reported that permission was denied for Swedish prosecutor Henrik Söderman to board.

On Monday, Sweden's foreign minister criticized China for not allowing its lead investigator on the ship.

In late September, the Yomiuri Shimbun (Japan’s largest circulation newspaper) reported that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) destroyer Sazanami (JS Sazanami, DD-113) had navigated north to south through the Taiwan Strait, located between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. The vessel had transited the Taiwan Strait en route to joint multinational training exercises with the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand in the South China Sea, in what was the first instance of a JMSDF destroyer traveling through the Taiwan Strait. According to the article, the transit of the Sazanami through the Taiwan Strait was based on orders from then-Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
