The EU’s maritime security strategy (EUMSS) is built upon closer collaboration within the EU, across regional and national levels.

The maritime security strategy promotes international peace and security, as well as respect for international rules and principles, while ensuring the sustainability of the oceans and the protection of biodiversity.

Objectives

  • protect EU interests at sea - citizens, economy, infrastructure, and borders
  • protect our natural resources and the marine environment
  • uphold international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
  • react promptly and effectively to growing threats (e.g., cyber and hybrid threats)
  • ensure relevant training and education to counter threats (e.g., cyber skills)

Twelve British seafarers have been recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty, receiving the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service which is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Merchant Navy Day, September 3.

Captain Chris Phillips, 56 from Pembrokeshire, bravely led his 30-person crew on a rescue mission during the dead of Winter in 2024, saving 89 lives at sea, including women and children, and a baby.

Born from a long line of seafarers, Phillips was inspired by his father and grandfather, both sea Captains, to join the Merchant Navy at the age of 16. He now holds the highest grade of seafarer certification in the UK and

  • El Ministerio, a través de Salvamento Marítimo, ha adjudicado dos contratos para reforzar la flota de la entidad pública y mejorar su capacidad operativa en misiones de rescate, asistencia y protección del medio marino. 
  • Con un presupuesto de 80 millones de euros (IVA no incluido), se construirán dos buques que estarán equipados para tareas de rescate, sofocar incendios en otros barcos, brindar ayuda humanitaria y realizar patrullaje en la zona SAR asignada a España. 
  • Las cuatro nuevas embarcaciones de intervención rápida tipo salvamar, que cuentan con una inversión de 11,4 millones de euros (IVA no incluido), estarán destinadas al salvamento y rescate de vidas y bienes en la mar.
