Seven of the 10 biggest ports in the world by cargo volume are in China. The remaining three are in Singapore,the Netherlands and South Korea. Ship-technology.com profiles the world's ten biggest ports based on 2012 cargo volume.
The Port of Shanghai is the biggest port in the world based on cargo throughput. The Chinese port handled 744 million tonnes of cargo in 2012, including 32.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers.
The port is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River covering an area of 3,619km². Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) owns the port facility. Wusongkou, Waigaoqiao and Yangshan are the three main container port areas.

WORLD’S LARGEST CONTAINER VESSEL CALLS AT PORT KLANG, MALAYSIA
Port Klang, December 19 – Port Klang, Malaysia has added another feather to its cap as the world largest container vessel MV CSCL Globe which belongs to China Shipping Container Lines (‘CSCL") made its maiden call at Westports, Port Klang today. With a length of 400 meters, width of 60 meters, the vessel is bigger than four standard football fields and is known as the "A380 in the Shipping Industry".
MV CSCL Globe, currently being deployed on the AEX1 service connecting Asia to Europe, is the first of five 19,100 TEU container vessels, and CSCL is expected to take delivery of 4 vessels in stages

Credit: Claudi Cervello Spain's National Ports Authority - Puertos del Estado – has been forced by the European Union's Court of Justice to change the way it provides stevedoring services in its domestic ports. The authority has announced it will now sit down with all concerned to work out a “consensual solution”.On December 11, the Court ruled that the existing model implies restrictions to the freedom to establish stevedoring companies and that this is “not justified”.Although no deadline for implementing changes was included in the ruling, Spain is thought to be required to immediately introduce changes.The main port union, Coordinadora, has rejected the judgement and has demanded

La Asociación de Empresarios de la Costa Tropical (Aecost) y la Plataforma por las infraestructuras en la Costa Tropical han anunciado que este lunes han presentado un recurso para tratar de impugnar la licitación de gestión de servicios de las líneas marítimas de interés publico Málaga-Melilla y Almería-Melilla, promovida por la dirección General de Marina Mercante.
Concretamente, y como ya anunciaron hace una semana, han presentado un recurso especial en materia de contratación pública con medida provisional de suspensión ante el Tribunal Administrativo Central de Recursos Contractuales y además una denuncia por incumplimiento del Derecho Nacional y Comunitaria en materia de competencias y ayudas del Estado ante la Comisión Nacional de los Mercados.
