WORLD’S LARGEST CONTAINER VESSEL CALLS AT PORT KLANG, MALAYSIA
Port Klang, December 19 – Port Klang, Malaysia has added another feather to its cap as the world largest container vessel MV CSCL Globe which belongs to China Shipping Container Lines (‘CSCL") made its maiden call at Westports, Port Klang today. With a length of 400 meters, width of 60 meters, the vessel is bigger than four standard football fields and is known as the "A380 in the Shipping Industry".
MV CSCL Globe, currently being deployed on the AEX1 service connecting Asia to Europe, is the first of five 19,100 TEU container vessels, and CSCL is expected to take delivery of 4 vessels in stages towards end of this year and early 2015.
The arrival of MV CSCL Globe was witnessed by Datuk Capt. David Padman, General Manager of Port Klang Authority, Mr. Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, CEO of Westports Malaysia, Capt Huang Bin, Managing Director of China Shipping (Malaysia) Agency Sdn Bhd, management team, and key customers of CSCL. Mementos were presented to the Captain of MV CSCL Globe marking the significant moment of the vessel call and reinforcing the long-term partnership between CSCL and Westports Malaysia.
"The partnership of China Shipping and Westports Malaysia commenced about 17 years ago and we have grown our business together over the years. The maiden call of MV CSCL Globe at Westports Malaysia is a significant milestone for us which will further strengthen our cooperation with Westports Malaysia as our shipping hub in this region", the President of China Shipping Regional Holdings Pte Ltd, Gu Jingsong said.

"The maiden call of MV CSCL Globe came at a perfect timing as we have recently completed our Container Terminal 7 (CT7) which increased our terminal capacity to 11 million TEU. We have the world’s tallest ship-to-shore cranes in our CT7 to handle this 19,000 TEU breed mega-sized vessel. Besides being the world’s largest container vessel, MV CSCL Globe marks another milestone for our port, it lifted our 8 millionth TEU container" Ruben said.
In June this year, Westports Malaysia set a new record on vessel productivity by handling 793 moves per hour on CSCL Le Havre. Container volume throughput growth at Westports Malaysia increased by 12% for the first nine months of 2014. The port is embarking on an expansion in building capacity and is expected to spend RM1 billion over the next 3 years on its Container Terminal 8 Expansion, which, upon completion will see their capacity increase to 13.8 million TEU.
CMA CGM, CSCL and United Arab Shipping Corporation are currently the hub customers of Westports Malaysia, and have recently formed an Ocean Three Network (O3), which is slated to commence operations in Jan 2015.
