Game Changers

http://futureshipping.dnvgl.com/#global-trends/game-changers

A sudden, unexpected change in an existing situation or activity is known as a “game-changer”. Looking into the distant future, we have identified some possible game changers for shipping resulting from existing global trends and drivers.

Unmanned vessel concepts

Advances in ICT will allow vessels to be fully operated from shore. Unmanned vessels will have lower operational costs than convention vessels due to the elimination of on-board crew costs, risk of human error and threats to crew safety.

Risk of hijacking

Unmanned ships remain controversial. Such vessels would be more vulnerable to hijacking than manned vessels. For example, a hijacked vessel could be ransomed or used in a terrorist attack against shore based facilities.

New technology helps financial institutions manage their maritime risk

Tuesday, 25 November 2014 15:50

S.T.G.

With 90 per cent of all world trade by volume and 70 per cent by value transported by sea, the maritime sector is the backbone of international trade and a critical global industry.

Yet the increase in international regulations and sanction policy, the emergence of new conflict zones and the rise of piracy and terrorism around the world means that financial organisations are increasingly exposed in this sector. Trade finance drives an estimated $14 trillion in annual global commerce, and the exposures of global banks in relation to shipping and related cargoes is high on the agenda. The consequences of sanctions breaches are serious, with

The Leonidas Fijians

Ernest Heatley
Sunday, November 16, 2014

Many are probably aware of the first lot of Indian indentured labourers arriving on board the Leonidas destined for sugarcane plantations in Fiji.

But there is much more to this famous journey 135 years ago.

In fact, extraordinarily, there were five iTaukei men who also made the long voyage over from Calcutta.

The men, who had somehow found themselves thousands of miles away in the Indian sub-continent, had been desperate to get back to Fiji.

They managed to eventually find their passage back to their homeland on board the Leonidas which brought the first wave of Indian labourers to our shores.

These men, who were from Kadavu, have been the subject of a paper

Stainless steel nuts with Spiralock thread form are said to be particularly suitable for marine engine applications

US company Stanley Engineered Fastening says that its Spiralock thread form is now available in stainless steel nuts for maintenance of marine machinery.

The Spiralock thread is claimed to be highly resistant to shock, vibration, and temperature induced loosening, and is now manufactured in a range of corrosion-resistant, stainless steel fractional and metric hex flange nuts, which are available from stock.

Spiralock threaded nuts are designed to accept standard male fasteners and to eliminate the need for other locking devices. Assembly is simplified, since the nut is free spinning
