HRAS Receives Funding for Missing Seafarers Project

Seafarers UK has announced initial funding to support the development of an international register of seafarers, including fishermen missing at sea. The project is being led by Human Rights at Sea (HRAS), an independent not-for-profit resource for the international maritime community, and founder David Hammond aims to have the on-line register up and running early in the new year.

 

 

 

Hammond is a leading advocate for the on-going and explicit international development and codification of human rights at sea and is author of the now established 100 Series Rules – an international set of lawful rules for the use of force at sea which

Melbourne Receives Deepest Draft Tanker

OMC International’s DUKC software navigation technology helped safely guide the deepest draft oil tanker through Melbourne’s challenging Port Phillip Heads this month.

On November 3, the Exxon chartered Ice Transporter tanker vessel (274m long and 48m beam) with a draft of 14.3 metres – the deepest vessel to visit Melbourne, Australia, – safely docked at Gelibrand berth after a 5 hour 20 minute transit into port under DUKC advice.

The tanker, piloted by Port Phillip Sea Pilots (PPSP), sailed without incident following months of rigorous planning between OMC, the Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) and the PPSP. This included a visit by the three parties in May this year to the Australian Maritime

PANAMA: The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) has alleged that the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is breaching the country's commitments to global labour principles.

In a statement on 24 November, ITF general secretary Steve Cotton claimed that the ACP's attempt to close down tugboat captains union UCOC is "a classic case of union busting and a fundamental violation of the International Labour Organisation [ILO] principles of freedom of association, which the Panamanian government rightly adopted".

According to ITF president Paddy Crumlin, the ACP is "currently seeking to appeal against a Labour Relations board
