The Demise of the Fair Winds Charter
Hong Kong’s voluntary Fair Winds Charter aimed at reducing air emissions in port officially expired at the end of the year. It is unlikely to be renewed.
Regulations mandating emission control measures in port, and thus negating the need for the Charter, are late, but still eagerly anticipated. For Arthur Bowring, managing director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSA), they will create a fair competitive environment that doesn’t penalize shipowners making an effort to reduce SOx emissions.

Plans to build a new natural gas terminal off the New York/New Jersey coast are stirring up quite the controversy.
Liberty Natural Gas is looking to build a new $600 million deepwater port in federal waters 19 miles off Jones Beach, New York, and 29 miles off Long Branch, New Jersey - a plan first hatched in 2008. Its purpose is to bring more natural gas to the New York area during peak demand times.
Business and labor groups support the plan, as it is projected to generate around 800 construction jobs. However, environmentalists and some elected officials say it is a dangerous, unnecessary project, given that America is overflowing in large supplies of domestically produced natural gas.

Asocelpa denunció que se impedía a los buques extender las redes en el muelle

La Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas indicó ayer que no hay trabas a la reparación de redes en el puerto de La Luz y que no ha recibido ninguna denuncia, queja o aviso al respecto de Asocelpa, la asociación que agrupa a consignatarios y estibadores de buques de Las Palmas. "En la Institución Portuaria no se tiene constancia de denuncia alguna de los atuneros por no permitir la reparación de sus útiles de pesca y afirmaciones diferentes a éstas sólo inciden en generar mala imagen para nuestros Puertos y daño a nuestra economía".
