Every year, people have died from accidents with cryogenic liquids. The enormous volume expansion of 600 to one for LNG, and 350 to one for LPG, takes everyone by surprise when there is a leakage or accidental spill. The vapours are non-toxic and odourless, and can easily reduce the oxygen level below that needed for respiration. There is no physiological warning of oxygen deficiency, and asphyxia will kill very quickly.
If handling a cryogenic liquid in a confined space, beware of the danger of asphyxia: carry a reliable oxygen meter to provide continuous monitoring of the air you are breathing.
This chapter includes a number of advisory points on safety by the author, from some 60 years of storing, handling and carrying out research on all kinds of cryogenic liquids, including LNGs, LPGs and Freon mixtures.

El 1 de enero entraron en vigor modificaciones en MARPOL y Código IMSBC y comienza cuenta regresiva de la IMO 2020
El 1 de enero de 2019 entraron en vigor las enmiendas a la nota de entrega de combustible relativa al suministro de fueloil a los buques equipados con mecanismos alternativos para cumplir con las prescripciones sobre las emisiones de azufre.
Estas enmiendas entran en vigor mientras el sector se prepara para el nuevo límite de contenido de azufre que tendrá que cumplirse a partir del 1 de enero de 2020 que pone como máximo un 0,50 % masa/masa de contenido en azufre, desde el 3,50% actual. IMO Releases Safety Video

A new IMO safety video was launched at the 100th meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) earlier this month.
The video highlights the wide spectrum of work the Committee has done over six decades to enhance safety and security at sea, including navigation, cargoes, ship construction, seafarer training, search and rescue and communications.
The meeting saw progress in the regulatory scoping exercise on maritime autonomous surface ships; approval of revised guidelines on fatigue and further updates on work on goal-based standards, polar shipping and safety issues relating to low-sulfur fuel.
