LR and Triumph Announce Sustainable Vessels JDP

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Triumph Energy (Triumph), a marine technology company specializing in green technology and automation, have announced a new Joint Development Project (JDP) to ensure vessels are built and operated sustainably. The collaboration will see a new ShipRight procedure for vessels used within the offshore energy, decommissioning and renewable energy sectors.

The new ShipRight Procedure will guarantee that vessels comply with relevant sustainability and ECO requirements, being built with the most sustainable materials that are currently available and ensuring that ships can be constructed and operated to meet the current IMO 2030 and 2050 requirements.

The joint development project will also focus on integrating advanced, remote facilities and artificial intelligence to reduce the crewing levels

Japanese shipowner MOL and powerplant operator Tohoku Electric Power have begun commercial operations with a novel reduced-emissions vessel: a coal-carrying bulker with auxiliary wind power. 

The 100,000 dwt Shofu Maru is the world's first vessel equipped with the MOL / Oshima Shipbuilding "Wind Challenger" telescopic wing sail. She will transport coal - primarily from Australia, Indonesia, and North America - on a long-term charter to Tohoku, Japan's fourth-largest power utility. 

The Wind Challenger wing sail is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessel operations by about five percent on a Japan-Australia voyage and about eight percent on a Japan-U.S. West Coast voyage when compared to a conventional vessel of the same type, according to MOL. 

 

 

 

Shipping ‘partially on track’ on decarbonisation targets, moving from pilots to production of zero-emission fuels now crucial

 

The shipping industry is ‘partially on track’ with regard to the progress in technology and supply of scalable zero-emission fuels (SZEF) to achieve the target of a 5 percent share of international shipping fuels by 2030, according to a new joint report produced by UMAS and UN Climate Change High Level Champions.

The findings show significant progress, especially in terms of commitments by industry, national governments, and positive developments at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Currently, there are at least 203 shipping decarbonization pilot and demonstration projects in the pipeline. Internationally, progress has been observed regarding bunkering and safety guideline developments.
