New Alliance to Develop Advanced e-Maritime Systems

An alliance between France's Orolia, and Transas Group, leaders in maritime simulation, navigation and surveillance systems, aims to integrate Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and Search and Rescue (SAR) functionality into enhanced marine communication solutions.
The primary focus of the agreement is on joint market and solution development for the maritime industry including:
- Creating Advanced SAR-enhanced MDA Systems.Adding McMurdo Group’s proven beacon technology and COSPAS-SARSAT/MESOAR satellite-based solutions (including mission control and rescue coordination centers) to Transas’ world-leading vessel traffic management, training and 3D simulation systems can result in higher levels of navigational and safety proficiency. Divergent views were expressed on the ‘Competence requirements of Future Mariners’ at the GlobalMET Annual Conference held this year last week. At one extreme was the possibility of seafaring profession becoming extinct with automation taking total control of shipping leaving little scope for mariners to operate ships. This according to A. A campaign to address the global shortage of seafarers, especially officers, which threatens the very future of the international shipping industry, has been launched by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in association with the International Labour Organization, the "Round Table" of shipping organizations - BIMCO, ICS/ISF, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO1 - and the International Transport Workers´ Federation.
The campaign calls on governments, industry and IMO, supported by ILO and other international organizations, to take specific actions, within their areas of influence, to increase the recruitment of seafarers to tackle the problem.
A recent report issued by maritime industry analysts Drewry Shipping Consultants assessed the current shortfall of officers in the global shipping fleet to be some 34,000, against a total requirement of 498,000. Moreover, based on Drewry´s

Hoy es un día emocionante para mí y memorable para la marina civil, en el que se hace realidad lo proyectado por hace casi doscientos años por Jovellanos, dijo ayer el Director General de la Marina Mercante en el acto de inauguración, el gijonés José Antonio Madiedo, en el transcurso del acto de inauguración del nuevo edificio de la Escuela Superior de la Marina Civil de Gijón. El próximo día 13 de octubre (2004), se ha previsto celebrar en Gijón (Principado de Asturias) los actos conmemorativos del 25 aniversario de la Escuela Superior de la Marina Civil de Gijón. La apertura del acto, a diferencia de lo que ocurría en otros tiempos, corresponderá al Excmo. Sr. Rector Magnífico de la Universidad de Oviedo, por pertenecer la Escuela a esa Universidad. Ante un evento de tal naturaleza es oportuno recordar, aunque sea de forma muy sucinta, la historia de esa escuela y sus antecedentes, tanto por las excepcionales circunstancias de su creación como por el hondo significado de su nacimiento en contra de la voluntad manifiesta del gobierno de la época.
