It came as something of a shock, especially in the run-up to the Motorship Gas Fuelled Ships conference (which takes place in Stavanger, Norway, on 25-27 November) that one major LNG fuelled ship project had been put on hold.

Brittany Ferries, which had ordered a new large gas-fuelled ro-pax ship and announced plans to convert the newer vessels in its fleet to run on LNG, announced that it would be going for the HFO and exhaust gas scrubber instead. The reason given was that the figures just did not add up, and the company felt the investment could not be justified at this stage.

Maritime Industry Needs Green Agenda Incentives

88% of the maritime industry agrees that the ‘Green Agenda’ is good for the global industry, but less than 46% say it actually offers good value for money, according to a survey carried out by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

With around 200 responses, the survey also claims that 75% of respondents think the ‘Green Agenda’ can impact business and could act as a success factor, with 78% agreeing that more options need to be made available to encourage companies to invest in green initiatives.

“The survey results are really interesting and clearly highlight that the industry as a whole could use a best-practice guide or a set of options that are clearly available,” said John Barnes of the IMarEST.
