Nord Stream 2 is not yet operational, but the Kremlin’s tightening grip on energy supplies is already being felt across Europe. The price of gas futures continues to hit record highs and has increased by over 600% in a matter of twelve months.

What we are currently witnessing in Europe is a rerun of the oil shocks America experienced in the 1970s. The commodity is different, the safeguards are stronger, but the underlying dynamics are the same. It was not a lack of oil tankers that pushed up prices of crude and triggered an economic recession in the US almost 50 years ago, but politically motivated decisions by the dominant oil producers to withhold supplies.

The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) has voiced its support for the Greek Prime Minister’s call for a European research centre for alternative marine fuels and technologies - and says it ‘stands ready to engage’.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the proposal to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier this week where he highlighted the importance of research and development into maritime decarbonisation.

Commenting, the President of the UGS, Theodore Veniamis, said the union supported Mitsotakis’ proposal and highlighted Greece’s ‘proven maritime know-how’ and ‘long-standing experience and scientific expertise’.

El amoniaco y el hidrógeno verde, aquel que se obtiene a partir de energías renovables, están estrechamente ligados en la carrera por desplazar a los combustibles fósiles. El amoniaco es uno de los productos químicos de mayor consumo de energía entre todos los de gran volumen, sobre todo para fabricar fertilizante, pero actúa como vector energético.

En este escenario, el Instituto alemán Fraunhofer está investigando cómo desarrollar pila de combustible de alta temperatura a base de amoniaco verde por primera vez para el transporte marítimo. El Viking Energy levará anclas en 2023 con esta tecnología a bordo.
