In accordance with Chapter V, regulation 19, of the 2000 amendments to the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, the use of a magnetic compass is mandatory. The magnetic compass must adhere to the standards set forth by the IMO.
The Panama Ship Registry has recently updated a Merchant Marine Circular to establish guidelines for
maintaining and testing magnetic compasses. These guidelines apply to all ships irrespective of size, and navigation area.
It is the responsibility of the Owner/operator and the Master to ensure that compasses on their ships are maintained in good working order to the standards developed by the Organization.
