The latest version of the World Magnetic Model (WMM), one of the key tools developed to model the change in Earth's magnetic field, has been released. The WMM is a spherical harmonic model of the Earth’s main magnetic field and its slow temporal change. The WMM is key to global navigation, ensuring that technological systems relying on the Earth’s magnetic field operate correctly.

The World Magnetic Model 2025 (WMM2025) provides more precise navigational data for all military and civilian planes, ships, submarines, and GPS units. This year, two versions of the model are being released. In addition to WMM2025, the release includes the first-ever World Magnetic Model High Resolution (WMMHR2025), which includes improved spatial resolution of approximately 300 kilometers

Learn about the state of the ocean through this Ocean Climate Portal. The interactive graphs, trends, maps and in-depth explanations on these above pages will guide you through the changes taking place in the ocean and their impacts on society.

The state of the ocean

The ocean is undergoing unprecedented changes due to global warming and other human-driven stressors such as pollution and overexploitation. This is on top of the natural variations that are an element of the complex and powerful part of Earth’s system.

The Copernicus Marine Service works to provide state-of-the-art data and information across the Blue (physical), Green (biogeochemical), and White (sea ice) Ocean.

A new study published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences has found that ocean warming in 2024 has led to new record high temperatures. The findings of the study will be used to update several Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Monitoring Indicators concerning ocean heat.

The ocean is the hottest it has ever been, not only at the surface level but also deep in the upper 2000 meters. These are the results of a new study titled ‘Record High Temperatures in the Ocean in 2024’ published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences. Prof. Lijing Cheng led a team of 54 scientists from 7 countries and discussed how a hotter ocean affects our lives on land and what this means for our future. The findings

First Reach Remote vessel delivered for offshore surveys

January 21, 2025

Hydro International

The delivery of Reach Remote 1, a 24-metre uncrewed surface vessel (USV) developed by Kongsberg Maritime, introduces a new approach to offshore operations. The vessel is the result of collaboration between Kongsberg Maritime, Reach Subsea, Massterly and Trosvik Maritime.

Following a series of sea trials conducted under the guidance of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Reach Remote 1 is set to begin its first mission conducting underwater surveys off the coast of Haugesund, Norway. A second vessel, Reach Remote 2, is now preparing for sea trials, building on the foundation established by this initial deployment.

Bjørg Mathisen Døving, vice president Reach Remote of Reach Subsea, said: “Reach Remote is an extraordinary journey, bringing
