The wreck of the Costa Concordia is due to be refloated in the next two weeks in the latest stage of the most expensive ship recovery operation in history.

The salvage could involve a semi-submersible boat effectively carrying the ship from its resting place off the Italian island of Giglio to Genoa to be dismantled.

Costs to insurers have spiralled to almost £1.2 billion because wrecks are usually cut into pieces and carried away. But Italian authorities have decided that such a move would risk an environmentally sensitive stretch of coastline so the ship is being removed in one piece.

Captain Rahul Kanna, a ship insurance specialist at insurer Allianz told the Mail in

FRANKFURT, July 6 Sun Jul 6, 2014 6:34am EDT

FRANKFURT, July 6 (Reuters) - The Costa Concordia disaster, when the cruise liner capsized off Italy more than two years ago, will likely end up costing the ship's owners just over 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion), a company executive told a German newspaper.

"So far, our costs are at 1 billion euros. But that does not include 100 million for the ship to be broken up for scrap and the cost of repairing damage to Giglio island," Michael Thamm, chief executive of Costa Crociere - a unit of Carnival Corp and operator of the ship - told weekly Bild am Sonntag.

The disaster dealt a blow to the image of Carnival, the world's largest cruise operator,

With crucial by-elections coming up at the end of the month, President Park Geun-hye is seeking to rally support around the ruling party by breaking a deadlock at the National Assembly. She has scheduled a meeting with the floor leaders of Korea's two main rival political parties and chief policymakers on Thursday, where she will urge them to pass a series of pending bills and settle unresolved issues. The meeting will be the first of its kind since President Park took office in February last year.   She is expected to call for bipartisan cooperation in the passage of urgent bills, such as a government reorganization proposal as well as a special bill aimed at determining the truth behind

Sewol.- Two Coast Guard officials have been arrested on charges of failing to carry out their duties at the time of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster . The district court in the southwestern city of Gwangju says one is a 43-year-old center leader of the Jindo V-T-S control Center and the other a 39-year-old C-C-T-V footage administrator. The court says the control center was unable to detect early signs of unusual activity over the waters they were monitoring on the morning of April 16th, the day of the ferry sank. The control center was also found to have fraudlently written the transcipt of communcations between the center and crew members onboard the Sewol-ho. The investigation is also looking into whether the center leader ordered his subordinates to erase weeks of C-C-T-V footage inside the center that would indicate a negligence of duty.
