Safety and Shipping 1912-2012: From Titanic to Costa Concordia

One hundred years after the sinking of the Titanic, specialist marine insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty has released a report entitled Safety and Shipping 1912-2012: from Titanic to Costa Concordia. The report, developed with the Seafarers’ International Research Centre (SIRC) of Cardiff University in the UK, not only reviews safety developments and trends over this period – it also looks ahead to emerging shipping risks and future challenges for the marine industry. Key findings include:

  • Shipping safety has greatly improved, but challenges remain.
  • Key challenges include increased ship sizes, ‘human element’ factors such training and crewing, and new shipping activity in polar waters.

IMO’s Henrik Madsen is presenting at the 2nd Annual Expanded ASEAN Seafarer Training on Counter Piracy workshop in Manila, Philippines (24-26 September). The workshop is being hosted jointly by the Philippines Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the US Maritime Administration and Department of State, with participation from the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Philippine Transmarine Carriers Inc., as well as young seafarers and cadets from the region. The workshop includes a site visit to the Maritime Academy of the Asia Pacific (MAAP).

The draft International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), along with proposed amendments to make the Code mandatory under SOLAS, were agreed by the inaugural session of the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 1).
