Mucho se ha escrito en España desde veinte años acá, acerca la Marina mercante, hasta el punto que nuestra bibliografía marítima es de las más voluminosas, y en ella encuentra el estudioso resueltos los magnos problemas económicos, políticos y sociales de nuestra patria. Before now, the global maritime business was dominated by Western countries. That appears to be changing as it has emerged that developing countries are increasing their involvement in many parts of global maritime business. Aside expert’s position on the development, the review of maritime transport 2016, published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this month, laid credence to this.

Maritime safety company Propel suggests that human failure is still top of the agenda when it comes to improving safety. However, in an age where ships are becoming more complex, is technology partly to blame?
“I was on a ship and in order to look at the read outs of equipment and to operate [it], you had to be like an octopus.” It comes across as slightly tongue-in-cheek, but Allan Graveson, senior national secretary at Nautilus International, is deadly serious. “When you come to the bridge layout itself, a pair of running shoes wouldn't go amiss. I'm just surprised there aren't more accidents.”
