New requirements under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to require all ships to have plans and procedures to recover persons from the water are among a set of SOLAS amendments entering into force on 1 July 2014.

The SOLAS amendments, adopted in 2012, were developed as part of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s work on large passenger ship safety and are aimed at ensuring all ships have the capability to effectively serve as a rescue asset and have the

Kurdish security forces deploy outside of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, 180 miles north of Baghdad on June 12

Iraq is coming apart before our eyes, undoing much of the economic progress that a couple of years of stability had afforded it. While it’s premature to call this a civil war, there’s little doubt that’s where things are headed, especially after a powerful Shiite cleric urged his followers to take up arms against Sunni militants during Friday prayers.

So far the action has been in the north, home to some but not much of Iraq’s productive oil reserves. The vast majority of Iraq’s more than 3 million barrels of daily oil production comes from the southern parts of

Polar Code and SOLAS amendments approved The MSC approved, for consideration with a view to adoption at its November 2014 session (MSC 94), the draft new SOLAS chapter XIV “Safety measures for ships operating in polar waters”, which would make mandatory the Introduction and part I-A of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code).
The MSC also approved, in principle, the draft Polar Code, with a view to adoption in conjunction with the adoption of the associated draft new SOLAS chapter XIV.

Matters related to the safety of navigation and communication were referred to the Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR), which meets in July, for finalization of the relevant chapters.

The International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) is to adopt amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), relating to lifeboat and passenger ship safety.

The MSC is currently discussing the proposed plans at its on-going 93rd session, which will run through 23 May at IMO's London headquarters.

The meeting will consider issues relating to subdivision and damage stability, with recommendations from the Experts Group on Formal Safety Assessment report, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) study on damage stability of roll-on/roll-off passenger ships and studies from the GOAL-based Damage Stability project (GOALDS).

Among the changes likely to be approved are amendments to SOLAS chapter III, which would require operators to periodically
