Day of the seafarer 2015
Day of the seafarer 2015 is fast approaching. This year the International Maritime Organization is shifting its focus to maritime education. We want you to consider a career at sea. Most people go to work in offices, factories and shops, but it's a different picture for seafarers: an office can be a hundred thousand-ton oil tanker or a cargo ship navigating the world’s oceans with beautiful landscapes.
So we'll be showing you what a career at sea could look like, until then, stay tuned for more information on an exciting campaign to come.

IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) met at the Organization's London Headquarters for its 92nd session from 12 to 21 June 2013.
The MSC adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) relating to passenger drills; discussed recommendations arising from the Costa Concordia incident; and considered matters related to piracy and armed robbery against ships and other items submitted by the IMO sub-committees.
Passenger drill amendments adopted
The MSC adopted amendments SOLAS regulation III/19 to require musters of newly embarked passengers prior to or immediately upon departure, instead of “within 24 hours”, as stated in the current regulations. The amendments are expected to enter into force on 1 January 2015.

Following the events of recent days in which more than 2000 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean Sea and several hundred lost their lives, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu today (Monday 16 February) called for more concerted action to address the issue of criminals who organize illegal and unregulated sea passage by migrants, putting thousands of lives at risk.

24/02/2015 IMO’s Javier Yasnikouski and Gisela Vieira are leading a sub-regional seminar on maritime surveillance monitoring and communication systems for maritime security, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (23 to 25 February). The seminar has been organized by IMO in cooperation with the Brazilian Navy and the South Atlantic Maritime Area Coordinator (CAMAS), with participation from African lusophone countries and observers from Argentina, Cameroon, Paraguay, Senegal, the United States and Uruguay. The seminar aims to strengthen cooperation between countries in the South Atlantic Ocean in order to improve maritime security and maritime domain awareness.
