New hull coating uses a low-VOC formulation and biocide-free fouling protection for medium- to high-activity vessels

Nippon Paint Marine has launched Aquaterras 1100, a biocide-free hull coating that, according to the company, combines a low-volatile organic compound formulation with a surface structure designed to reduce the attachment of marine organisms.

The company said the coating complies with regulations in major shipbuilding markets, including China and South Korea.

Aquaterras 1100 uses HydroPhix, described as “a micro-domain structure that combines hydrophilic and hydrophobic structures that reduce the ability of marine organisms to attach to hull surfaces, ensuring long-lasting fouling protection without the use of biocides.”

Traditionally, one of the most effective means for the wider transmission of new ideas and knowledge in higher education has been through scholarly publication. This is the principal mechanism whereby universities assemble, store and disseminate the findings of their research. Scholarly publications are also an important mechanism in terms of fulfilling WMU's global responsibilities under our Charter to provide an international focus for networking and collaboration.

WMU Publications has been established as the route for publishing of scholarly books on maritime affairs written by WMU staff and external maritime experts linked to the University.

From final discharge all the way to a clean, cargo-ready hold

QUICK ANSWER: MAIN ITEMS WHEN PREPARING CARGO HOLDS

Hold preparation starts the moment discharge is complete — not when the loading port appears on the horizon. Get these right and the surveyor will have nothing to say.

Before any cleaning:
• Push stevedores to discharge all sweepings before they leave — cleaning is far harder after they go
• Clear any cargo that has fallen into bilge wells before the end of discharge
• Identify your bilge system type: bilge pump (engine room) or direct-overboard eductor
• Decide what charter party requires: sweep, wash, or grain-clean standard

Cleaning sequence:
• Sweep the hold before washing to remove bulky residues
• Wash top-down — deckhead first, tanktop and bilge flush last
• Maintain good water pressure throughout and keep

More than half of American mariners responding to a new survey say they plan to leave their jobs in the next five years.

This is one finding of an international study based on responses from 4,372 mariners, including 500 Americans, sailing in a range of billets aboard different types of commercial vessels.

The study was conducted by World Maritime University with support from the Officers’ Union of International Seamen (OUIS), of which MM&P and MEBA are members.

The three largest groups were from India (25.1 percent), the Philippines (15.8 percent) and the US (11.5 percent).

US seafarers reported the longest workweeks—79 hours. Additionally, 94.8 percent of American seafarers reported not having a weekly day off, and 87.6 percent of
