UK – Further to our recent story regarding the stranded crew of the MV Munzur, the Panamanian flagged, Turkish owned freighter which has been detained by the UK authorities over health and safety matters, comes some good news thanks to the efforts of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) who had threatened the ship with arrest if the owners failed to pay outstanding wages.
An ITF statement says it is ‘able to report progress in the case of the filthy and unsafe vessel Munzur, which is detained in Fowey in Cornwall, United Kingdom. Following the passing of a deadline for action by the owners to pay and repatriate its crew, the company has now agreed to pay all

Las navieras estiman más de 6.000 personas cruzarán hoy Estrecho de Gibraltar

Las compañías navieras que operan en la ruta del Estrecho de Gibraltar entre los puertos de Ceuta y Algeciras (Cádiz) han calculado que más de 6.000 personas cruzarán hoy este trayecto por el fin del puente festivo del Primero de Mayo.
Según han informado a Efe fuentes portuarias, el final del puente que comenzó el pasado 30 de abril provocará hoy que varios de los barcos que operan en esta travesía alcancen el cien por cien de ocupación o estén muy cerca de esta cifra.
Las previsiones indican que esta tarde se espera la mayor concentración de personas para viajar en los dos sentidos como consecuencia del fin de este periodo vacacional.

Imabari will build the two new LNG carriers at its Saijo yard in 2017
Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding Co Ltd is to build two LNG carriers at its Saijo yard for Spanish shipping company, Elcano.
The new LNG vessels will increase Elcano’s capacity from 154,000m³ to 178,000m³ with GTT’s MarkIII Flex, which will reduce the boil-off rate (BOR) from 0.15% to 0.1%, while its re-liquefaction system will ensure the vessels’ “operational flexibility”.

El Tribunal de Justicia de la UE tendrá que resolver los recursos presentados contra el veto de la Comisión Europea a las ventajas fiscales obtenidas por las empresas navieras registradas en Canarias. Varias sociedades inscritas en las Islas, en unión con inversores y bancos, han demandado a Bruselas por obligarles a devolver las bonificaciones fiscales del Impuesto de Sociedades obtenidas entre 2007 y 2011.
Este proceso es consecuencia de la decisión adoptada por el comisario de la Competencia, Joaquín Almunia, sobre el llamado tax lease, un mecanismo que amparaba la legislación tributaria española
