Types and Causes of Tidal Cycles –

Diurnal, Semidiurnal, Mixed Semidiurnal; Continental Interference

 

If the Earth were a perfect sphere without large continents, all areas on the planet would experience two equally proportioned high and low tides every lunar day. The large continents on the planet, however, block the westward passage of the tidal bulges as the Earth rotates. Unable to move freely around the globe, these tides establish complex patterns within each ocean basin that often differ greatly from tidal patterns of adjacent ocean basins or other regions of the same ocean basin (Sumich, J.L., 1996).

SURFING

Welcome to Pororoca, one of the longest waves in the world. The tidal bore travels up to 500 miles (804 kilometers) upstream of the Amazon River in northern Brazil.

It's an impressive natural phenomenon that forever remains in the memory of those who see it and ride it.

The word Pororoca should come from the indigenous Tupi word "porórka," meaning "great roar," or from the aboriginal term to express the act of destroying everything.

Brazil is one of Nature's sanctuaries on Earth, home to rich fauna and flora and the epicenter of nearly all natural events.

French oceanographer and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau was the first person to document Pororoca aboard his RV Calypso research vessel on March 28, 1982.

El 1 de febrero, el capitán Rich Madden, instructor y marino profesional del MITAGS, impartió un seminario en vivo para los pronosticadores del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional de EE. UU. desde el buque portacontenedores  Maersk Columbus , que transitaba frente a la costa de África occidental. Puede que sea uno de los primeros seminarios educativos impartidos de forma remota desde un barco mercante en navegación.
