View fire behaviour maps on the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS).

Understanding fire behaviour is critical for managing wildland fires. It is about how:

  • fuels ignite
  • flames develop
  • fire spreads and is extinguished

Factors such as fuel, weather and topography control:

  • flame characteristics
  • rate of fire spread
  • direction of spread
  • intensity of a wildland fire

Canadian researchers conduct experimental fires and study wildland fires under various conditions. Over decades, a system of scientific models to predict fire spread, intensity and growth across Canadian landscapes have been developed. These tools are invaluable for preparing for and responding to wildland fire.

Ignition, growth and extinguishment

After a wildland fire ignites, a front develops where flaming combustion occurs. Flame height indicates fire intensity – the amount of heat released,

The Egyptian Navy Hydrographic Department (ENHD) has released two new S-101 test datasets, marking a significant milestone in Egypt’s ongoing efforts to modernize its hydrographic services and strengthen maritime safety. The datasets cover the strategically important ports of Alexandria and Port Said, two of the country’s most dynamic maritime hubs.

This release underscores ENHD’s commitment to advancing digital navigation and reflects its broader strategic objective to provide state-of-the-art navigational tools that enhance both safety and operational efficiency at sea. By adopting the S-101 standard – part of the next-generation S-100 framework – the department is aligning national hydrographic capabilities with global best practices and technological developments.

Embracing digital transformation

The S-101 datasets introduce a more advanced data model and

Residents in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos on Monday braced for the Atlantic season's first hurricane, the Category 4 Erin, after it strengthened over the weekend while sweeping past Caribbean islands.

While Erin is not on track to make direct landfall and has yet to cause major damage, its growing size and strength are threatening rough seas and have prompted some evacuation orders in parts of North Carolina, on the US East Coast.

"Erin's already large size and intensity are acting like a giant plunger on the sea surface," AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said in
