Varouxakis said FreeSeas has no relationship with the claimants

A Greek bulker operator says the arrest of one of its vessels in Panama following allegations of unpaid bunkers stemmed from claims against an unrelated company that chartered the ship last year, industry news site TradeWinds reports.

"We think the arrest is unlawful and we intend to fight this in court," said Ion Varouxakis, chief executive of FreeSeas.

The 30,800 deadweight tonne (dtw) Free Neptune was used about a year ago by TME, which failed to pay for fuel it purchased.

"The charterer went bankrupt and didn't pay for the bunkers," Varouxakis said.

"Now the suppliers are doing whatever they can to try and recover the money.

Train pilots and tug captains to transit through the two new lock

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will charter a Post-Panamax vessel before the opening of the expanded Canal to be used for training purposes in the Third Set of Locks.

The Executive Vice President of Operations Esteban Saenz reported that the Panama Canal will charter a Post-Panamax ship to train pilots and tugboat captains that will assist in transits through the new lane.

Saenz said the vessel will be used several months before the opening of the expanded Canal to test the new locks.

"This is one of the best ways to train our pilots and tug captains in the joint effort required to transit through the two new lock complexes

It's possible to outsource ship performance analysis by using a mathematical performance model where ship owners provide main dimensions and trial data that are then entered into this model and then it is run by naval architects who are analyzing the performance data from the vessels and then that data goes back to the ship owners / technical department of the company and in some cases data goes out to the ships and the crew for awareness and implementation of Hull and Propeller performance policy.  In other words, there's a general mathematical model where main dimensions and trial data are entered into that model and then a specific ship model is created, the weekly performance data is analysed and there are instruments checks, procedural checks
