As the summer arctic shipping season gets underway, a member of a group that formed after the Selendang Ayu ran aground a decade ago, is calling for more rescue tugs, monitoring and risk management measures in the Bering Strait and Unimak Pass.

In letters to the Coast Guard, Rick Steiner with the Shipping Safety Partnership, says the money to address these concerns could come from the 3.5 billion-dollar Oil Spill Liability Trust fund the Coast Guard has.

On his election yesterday as President of The Nautical Institute, Captain Robert McCabe FNI issued a challenge to members and branches to evaluate their contribution to the Institute as a “responsible and independent voice for the maritime industry, selflessly dedicated to delivering the highest standards in the profession. What truly matters is that the spark that made you and others become a member is fanned to become a beacon for others and for our industry.”

This year, it was recently revealed, there were more people fleeing war, famine and persecution than at any time since the end of World War II. Maybe it should not surprise us, as everywhere we look there are terrible things happening, which prompt people to leave their homes.

A sizeable proportion of these displaced people (whether they are asylum seekers or economic migrants is irrelevant) are finding themselves afloat at some stage of their journey. They will have placed themselves in the hands of the people smugglers, criminal gangs which have multiplied to service the needs of the desperate and charge accordingly. Increasingly merchant shipping finds itself encountering the highly unsuitable craft employed by the criminals, with masters facing real humanitarian
