Brussels, 5 November 2014, The European maritime industry launched the European Research Association “Vessels for the Future” with its first general assembly on 5 November 2014. “I am happy to see 50 companies, research institutes, academic organisations and interested associations joining this initiative,” said Dr. Pierre C. Sames (DNV GL), Chairman of the Research Association. “The initiative will promote and facilitate maritime research, development and innovation with a focus on vessels and waterborne operations”.
Looking towards 2050, Europeans will be using their maritime and inland waterways space for transport; offshore food production, energy generation, mineral exploitation as well as for urban dwelling; tourism; manufacturing; and trade. The second Horizon 2020 (H2020) call for Applications in Satellite Navigation, managed by the European GNSS Agency, is officially open. With a budget of EUR 25 million for the 2015 call, the deadline for submitting proposals is 8 April 2015.
To accelerate EU space policy, the second Horizon 2020 call focuses on growth and impact across all market segments, including transport (road, rail, maritime, aviation), high precision surveying, location based services (LBS), agriculture and emergency services. Priority is also placed on raising productivity and competitiveness while reducing adverse environmental impact.

EU envisions ‘Vessels for the Future’

European Research Association (ERA) ‘Vessels for the Future’ has been launched by the European maritime industry in order to address various policy developments in the sector.
The project will address European policies for transport, enterprise, energy, environment and climate protection within the framework of the European Commission’s research and innovation initiative Horizon 2020, according to the Maritime Union.
Vessels for the Future will also be looking to progress towards sustainable transport and maintain cutting-edge design, manufacturing and innovative production capacities.
