The Day

The maritime world went into overdrive last week to dislodge one of the world's biggest ships after it got jammed in Egypt's Suez Canal, laying bare the fresh challenges the industry must navigate as mammoth vessels play an ever larger role in global trade.

The container ship Ever Given got stuck across the canal early Tuesday, and tugs and diggers were still struggling to get it afloat. The Ever Given can haul more than 20,100 steel boxes, making it one of the largest container ships, according to Jayendu Krishna, director of maritime advisors at the consultancy Drewry. Such vessels can be longer than the Eiffel tower, and bigger than three soccer fields.

Maritime Research & Analysis

New global trade forecast by IHS Markit GTA Forecasting

25 March 2021 Tomasz Brodzicki, Ph.D.

Positive outlook for 2021 and stronger revival already in Q4 of 2020 for East Asia & Europe, uncertainty still high.

Main Observations

  • The incorporation of the most recent historical data for the third and fourth quarter of 2020 has significantly affected our estimates of trade decline in 2020 and forecasts for 2021-2022. The recovery started much faster in China and East and Southeast Asia and proved to be stronger than expected. The last quarter of 2020 proved to be positive for the EU as well
  • We predict a year-on-year increase in the real value of global trade of 6.5% in 2021 and 4.3% in 2022.
