The global maritime community is probably the most culturally diverse industry there is, yet it lags behind many other industries in the number of women in top-level positions and in the integration of women into jobs at sea. 

A recent report indicates that Brazil, Russia, India and China (the BRIC countries) have the highest number of female senior managers in the maritime industry (26 percent). G7 countries follow with 18 percent.

There is a long history of gender stereotypes to overcome. Women had to fight for the right to work and be educated, and it wasn’t until 1870 that education became compulsory for girls in the U.K., for example.

The oceans may be vast, yet they still can grow crowded. Some congested areas have enough ship traffic that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other groups maintain traffic separation schemes—the equivalent of highways for ships—to reduce the risk of collisions.

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this view of northbound and southbound shipping lanes off the coast of China’s Shandong Peninsula on February 24, 2015. The lanes form one of the main routes from the Yellow Sea into the Bohai Sea and the Chinese ports of Dalian and Tianjin, two of the busiest in the world. Asshown by this map, several lanes of traffic intersect northeast of the Shandong Peninsula.

En la reciente sentencia referida al recurso de WWF contra el decreto 355/2013 de 17 de mayo que aprobó el Plan Hidrológico del Guadalquivir (PHG), el Tribunal Supremo (TS) ha declarado nula la incorporación del proyecto de dragado del estuario en ese plan. Como señala la sentencia, toda actuación sobre el dominio público hidráulico se encuentra sujeta a la planificación hidrológica, pues los planes proyectan y concretan, sobre el territorio de una demarcación hidrográfica específica, las previsiones generales de la ley. Por esto, cualquier intento de obviar esta sentencia, argumentando que se refiere al Plan Hidrológico y no al proyecto de dragado de profundización, está destinado al fracaso.

Esta imagen es la que figura en el censo oficial de la flota pesquera, y probablemente se corresponde con la de la embarcación antes de haber sufrido una o varias  reformas. Naturalmente, forma parte de la investigación indagar sobre los cambios que afectan a la seguridad de la embarcación.
