Coast Guard can redeem itself by effective law enforcement

The reorganization of the Korea Coast Guard should be the start of a more rigorous policing of our waters against illegal fishing by the Chinese.

Illegal fishing in the West Sea is at its height ahead of the December to March ban on catching blue crabs. According to the Korea Coast Guard in charge of the West Coast, some 2,000 to 3,000 unlicensed Chinese boats are illegally fishing within our Exclusive Economic Zone. Using banned fine dragnets, they are virtually wiping out the fry as well. Korean fishermen have reported their fishing gear and nets being destroyed by the Chinese.

The captain of the ferry Sewol has been sentenced to 36 years in prison. Maritime trade union Nautilus’ general secretary has said to be appalled at the severity of the sentence.

The Sewol sank in April off the South-Korean coast with the loss of more than 300 lives, mostly school children.

Sentence

Although acquitted of homicide, captain Lee Joon-Seok now faces 36 years in prison after a five month trial. Prosecutors had called for the death penalty. Captain Lee was found guilty of violating ‘seamen’s law’ and abandonment causing death and injury.

El hombre perteneciente al Arbumasa XVIII cayó al mar a la altura de Cabo Blanco y su cuerpo fue encontrado cuatro horas más tarde por la tripulación del Arbumasa XVI, barco que llevó el cuerpo del marinero en horas de la madrugada del lunes a Puerto Deseado.
 
La victima de 42 años de edad y de nacionalidad española, cumplía funciones a bordo del buque pesquero “ARBUMASA XVIII” - de bandera argentina -, como asesor de pesca. El cuerpo fue rescatado de las aguas y el buque lo trasladó a Puerto Deseado, donde se labrarán actualmente las actuaciones pertinentes para determinar las causas y motivos

SEOUL, South Korea — The head of the company whose ferry sank in April, killing more than 300 people in one of South Korea’s worst disasters in decades, was convicted on Thursday of accidental homicide and embezzlement and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Kim Han-sik, 71, the chief executive of the Chonghaejin Marine Company, was among 11 officials from the ferry operator; a cargo company, Union Transport; and the port inspector, the Korea Shipping Association, who were on trial in Gwangju District Court for their roles in the disaster.
