The CMA CGM Group has signed a letter of intent for six LNG-powered 1,700 TEU containerships to be built at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India, making it the first major foreign carrier to commission LNG-fueled vessels from an Indian shipyard.

All vessels will be registered under the Indian flag and are designed to run on LNG and low-carbon fuels, supporting CMA CGM’s goal to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050. The project will involve technical cooperation with Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries scheduled from 2029 to 2031.

This initiative aligns with India’s strategic priorities, including Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, and strengthens CMA CGM’s local presence. The Group plans to reflag four vessels under the Indian registry in 2025 and hire 1,500 Indian seafarers by 2026.

India is a strategic country for CMA CGM, where we invest, train, and innovate. Beyond shipbuilding, we are strengthening our partnerships in logistics, maritime training, and sustainable transport to support India’s growth and contribute to the decarbonization of global trade

… explained Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group.

CMA CGM also invests in India’s maritime infrastructure, including stakes in Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal and Mundra Port, and operates 19 weekly maritime services connecting India to global markets.

CMA CGM’s Indian operations include a 17,000-strong workforce, its Global Business Services hub in Chennai with over 9,000 employees, and CEVA Logistics, managing 900,000 m² of warehouse space across 31 cities.

The partnership with CSL highlights shared goals of innovation, sustainability, and supporting India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

The partnership between CMA CGM and Cochin Shipyard underscores a mutual dedication to innovation, sustainability, and global maritime excellence. Vessels will be delivered from 2029 to 2031, in line with the Group’s fleet renewal and energy transition strategy.

This project is also of great significance to CSL as we are collaborating with the largest shipbuilding group HD KSOE as the major partner, which further reinforces our commitment to bring the best in class solutions through partnerships, to serve clients across the globe
