University of Gibraltar Hosts Global Dialogue on the Future of Merchant Shipping

The University of Gibraltar welcomed international experts, industry leaders, and policymakers for the first outreach event of the International Sea Power Conference 2025, positioning Gibraltar at the centre of critical conversations on the future of global shipping.

 

Hosted in partnership with the Council on Geostrategy and the Royal Navy, the event — themed “The Future of International Merchant Shipping” — addressed the challenges and opportunities shaping one of the world’s most vital industries.

 

Gibraltar: A Strategic Maritime Hub

 

Recognised as one of the world’s most significant maritime crossroads, Gibraltar provided an ideal setting for this dialogue. Hosting the event highlighted not only Gibraltar’s role in global trade but also the University’s growing impact in maritime research, education and skills development.

 

The event opened with a formal welcome by Professor Catherine Bachleda, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University of Gibraltar, followed by remarks from Commodore Tom Guy, Commander of British Forces Gibraltar, and a keynote address by Chris Shirling-Rooke, CEO of Maritime UK.

 

Panel Highlights

 

The event featured three themed sessions:

 

Charting a Sustainable Course – A focus on IMO 2030/2050 decarbonisation targets, greener fuels, and the role of port authorities, featuring voices from the Gibraltar Port Authority, University of Gibraltar, Gibdock, and Peninsula360.
The Next Generation’s Perspective – Cadets and a recent graduate from the University’s School of Maritime Science shared their insights on how the industry must adapt to technology and innovation.
Building a Resilient Maritime Workforce – Industry and academic leaders explored the impact of geopolitics, the importance of shore-side roles, and the need for continuous professional develop
