09 Jan 2025, 2:45 amThe government of South Korea recently launched a new commercial technology development project with the objective of designing and building the country's first liquefied hydrogen (LH2) carrier.

The launch of the Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier Commercialisation Technology Development Project comes following the conclusion of a planning meeting held last December at the Hydrogen Ship Technology Centre (HSTC) of Pusan National University.

Earlier in October 2024, the HSTC emerged as the winning bidder for the implementation of the project, which is sponsored by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. As a result, the centre will lead the construction of LH2 carrier, tentatively named Hydro Ocean K, and provide a performance testing site for sea trials of the ship's core equipment.

The project will have a duration of four years and four months ending in December 2028.

Among the HSTC's partners on the project are the Korea Institute of Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering and local shipbuilders Samsung Heavy Industries, Hanwha Ocean, and HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering.
