Dynamic Positioning
Important news about The Nautical Institute's new DP scheme and revalidation of DP certificates...
The review of The Nautical Institute's not-for-profit DP Operator training scheme has concluded. For full details of the new scheme simply download the following document:
DP Training Certification Scheme - March 2014
The systems upgrades required for the new scheme are being worked out and will determine the implementation date which will be announced shortly. A transition period will allow all stakeholders to comply with the new scheme and guidelines will be issued to the industry and training providers to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. The current scheme will remain valid during the transition period.
Shuttle Tankers
As this is a transition period, the Shuttle Tanker scheme is undergoing further refinements. Please note that the previous document is subject to change.
Please check back for further info.
Revalidation of DP certificates Due to the delay in finalising the new scheme, The Nautical Institute is postponing the re-validation of DP Operator certificates to January 2015. During this period, The Nautical Institute strongly recommends that DPOs who already hold the NI DP certificate log their DP sea time in their NI and/or IMCA logbook. Confirmation letters are required for revalidation of DP sea time gained after 1st January 2014. The revalidation will be phased as below:
2015: Revalidation of certificates issued from 1984 to 2002, 2009 and 2010 2016: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2003-2004 and 2011 2017: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2005-2006 and 2012 2018: Revalidation of certificates issued from 2007-2008 and 2013 2019: Revalidation of certificates issued in 2013 and so on
More information will be available via The Nautical Institute website from March 2014 and communicated to the industry through the members of the Dynamic Positioning Training Executive Group (DPTEG).
Further information about our Dynamic Positioning scheme
The Nautical Institute DP Operator training scheme is the industry-recognised learning route to becoming a qualified Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO). It is a not-for-profit scheme administered by The Nautical Institute - a Registered Charity (No.1002462). Contrary to some reports, there are no plans to merge our DP Operator training scheme with any other scheme. The Nautical Institute has managed the scheme since its inception in the mid 1980’s and in conjunction with the industry has developed the certification criteria. It administers the certification of DPO’s together with the accreditation of the training providers.
In order to ensure that the scheme continues to meet current industry needs, the Dynamic Positioning Training Executive Group (DPTEG) was established to facilitate communication and input from a broad range of stakeholders.
The group is a pan Industry forum of training providers, trade organisations and professional associations who have a remit or interest in DP training.
The remit of DPTEG is to review and develop the Nautical Institute DP Operator training scheme and to evaluate its effectiveness in providing the DP industry with competent DP Operators. It seeks to make decisions and to implement actions to improve the Nautical Institute DP training scheme, including certification criteria, DPO competency and training support.
DPTEG comprises two groupings – member organisations and observers.
Member organisations are:-
- The Nautical Institute
- Accredited DP training providers
Observers include, but are not restricted to:
- International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA)
- International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC)
- International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
- Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF)

DP Refresher Course
Dynamic Positioning FAQ
Q. Are the DP courses conducted at The DP Centre London accredited and if so by whom A. Yes, the DP courses run at all the C-MAR DP Centres are fully accredited by The Nautical Institute which is the only body in the world that gives accreditation to DP courses. Its guidelines for the training and certification of Dynamic Positioning Officers are accepted as the industry standard. Check this link http://www.nautinst.org/training/pdf/DPtrainingCentres.pdf
Q. Does The Dynamic Positioning Centre issue Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificates? A. No, The Dynamic Positioning Centre which is accredited by the Nautical Institute only conducts DP Training and issues DP Course Certificates. Only the Nautical Institute can issue a Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificate.
Q. What are the different types of Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificates? A. There is a Limited DP Certificate which only allows you to work on a DP Class I vessel and there is an Unlimited DP Certificate which allows you to work on any Class of DP vessel.
Q. How do I upgrade my Limited Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificate? A. Once you have completed the required DP time on a DP Class II or Class III vessel and are ready to apply for an upgrade, you have send the completed Section F in the DP Log book,
Upgrade form and original Limited certificate to The Nautical Institute.
Q. How long is my Dynamic Positioning Operators Certificate valid for? A. Your certificate will remain valid as long as you operate DP systems regularly. This is defined as a minimum of six months DP watch keeping experience within the previous five years or if you work as a DP instructor at an Institute accredited training centre.
Should a period of five years elapse and you have not served aboard DP vessels, operated the DP equipment or instructed, you should recommence the training at the Simulator/Advanced course and complete all the requirements thereafter. On the attendance at the Simulator/Advanced course, the training centre will issue you with a new logbook and clearly mark this as part of the certificate renewal process.
Q. Will DP time served on DP vessels prior to doing the DP Basic Course be counted? A. Currently any DP seatime accumulated within five years of you applying for your DP certificate, even if gained before taking the Basic course, will be counted towards the 6 months watchkeeping time required to gain a DP certificate. However, you are still required to complete 30 days seagoing familiarisation after the Basic course and a further 30 days after the Advanced. This time cannot be replaced by previous seatime.
From 1st January 2012 a maximum of 30 days DP time gained prior to attending the Basic (Induction) Course will be counted in order to apply for a DP certificate.
Q. I do not have an OOW Certificate. Can I still train to become a Dynamic Positioning Officer? A. Currently It is not a statutory requirement for you to hold an OOW certificate to be able to become a certified DPO. The DP Operator’s training programme is open to all ranks, provided they can meet the required DP watchkeeping time.
From 1st January 2012 the Minimum qualification will be set as STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck and Regulation III/1 – III /2 – III/3 Engine.
Alternative Deck qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Prospective DPO’s, who are in the process of training for an STCW certificate can start the DP scheme and complete all the elements, but cannot, apply for the DP certificate until they hold an appropriate STCW certificate.
Q. Can the DP Centre assist me in finding a job after completing my DP courses? A. Yes, the DP Centre can provide addresses of DP companies once you have attended the Basic DP course at one of our DP Centres. This list is only an example of the types of companies that will possibly be recruiting but we are not aware of the companies recruiting status at any one time.
