Alrededor de mil militares de unidades gaditanas de la Armada participarán en misiones en el exterior durante este 2021, principalmente en la misión Atalanta contra la piratería en el Índico. Actualmente, otros 500 están en operaciones en el extranjero, contando entre ellos con el Juan Sebastián de Elcano, dando la vuelta al mundo en su actual crucero de instrucción.

Los primeros en salir han sido la dotación del buque Castilla, que partieron este sábado de la Base de Rota. El buque, con alrededor de 250 personas, ya se está vacunando del coronavirus. Piracy has existed for as long as there has been maritime trade; it conjures images of sail ships, the jolly roger, treasure and buccaneers on the seven seas. Pirates in the twenty first century, however, are more familiar with semi-automatic weapons than a cutlass, while their treasure is less gold doubloons than hostages and the latest electric goods.

2020 Sees Increase in Piracy and Armed Robbery at Sea Incidents

The International Chamber of Commerce’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB)’s annual piracy report recorded an increase of piracy and armed robbery incidents in 2020.

In 2020, IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) received 195 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships worldwide, in comparison to 162 in 2019. The incidents included three hijacked vessels, 11 vessels fired upon, 20 attempted attacks, and 161 vessels boarded. The rise is attributed to an increase of piracy and armed robbery reported within the Gulf of Guinea as well as increased armed robbery activity in the Singapore Straits.

Globally, 135 crew were kidnapped from their vessels in 2020, with the Gulf of Guinea accounting for over 95% of crew numbers

(Bloomberg) --Iran has claimed responsibility for seizing a tanker, used to carry oil products and chemicals, after it veered into its territorial waters.

The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported Monday that Iran has seized the South Korea-flagged Hankuk Chemi vessel due to “environmental and chemical pollution in the Persian Gulf,” citing sources with knowledge of the matter. The vessel was carrying 7,200 tonnes of ethanol and the arrested crew members were from Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar, according to Tasnim.

The seizure follows a series of shipping security incidents in the Persian Gulf. The region and the Red Sea have been a hotbed for attacks on vessels in recent years, with tensions flaring between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
