Rolls-Royce unveiled at Nor-shipping on 3 June an azimuth thruster featuring permanent-magnet (PM) technology.

The group's PM technology portfolio includes tunnel thrusters and a newly developed winch.

Sea trials to evaluate the new thruster's energy-saving potential took place on board Trondheim-based Gunnerus, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's (NTNU's) research ship.

During trials the pair of thrusters installed on the vessel demonstrated efficiency savings of 7-13% depending on ship speed, outperforming azimuth thrusters powered by a conventional diesel-electric system.

"Following a programme of successful sea trials, which exceed our expectations in terms of efficiency, we are delighted to broaden our range of permanent-magnet technology with the launch of a new azimuth thruster," said Helge Gjerde, Rolls-Royce

Norwegian offshore support vessel operator Eidesvik is installing a batter system on board its supply vessel Viking Queen. This will be the first offshore vessel to get such system installed as a retrofit solution and demonstrates that it is possible to achieve significant reduction in emissions for existing vessels.

The LNG fuelled Viking Queen is a 6,000 ton vessel built in 2008. Its new energy storage system will have a capacity of 650kWH and can supply up to 1600kW. The solution gives a fuel saving of approximately 18 percent for the vessel. Further, NOx and CO2 emission levels will be reduced by approximately 25 percent.

The project is the result of cooperation between Lundin Norway who has the

'Ampere' is one of three ferries operated by Norled on the route between Lavik and Oppedal

‘Ampere’, the world’s first large fully electric vessel, has just received the Seatrade Clean Shipping award for 2015. Owned and operated by Norled and designed and constructed by Fjellstrand, the DNV GL classed car ferry is a fully battery driven catamaran made of aluminium.

Innovative not only in its propulsion system but in its highly efficient hull design the 80 metre long vessel is able to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers across the Sognefjord between the villages of Lavik and Oppedal in Norway.

Belgian dredging group DEME has ordered what it says will be the world's first two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered dredgers from Dutch shipbuilder Royal IHC for an undisclosed price.

The two trailing suction hopper dredgers will have a dual fuel capability, enabling them to use LNG or diesel, and are due to go into operation before the end of next year.

DEME head of construction and conversion Jan Gabriel told IHS Maritime that the two vessels were destined for use in the European market and that, after extensive study, the group had come to the conclusion that LNG propulsion was the best solution to ensure that they complied with marine fuel sulphur limits in sulphur emission control areas.
