SINGAPORE: While Sri Lanka braces itself for a possible oil spill from a sunken Singapore-registered container ship, the vessel operator's chief executive on Thursday (Jun 3) expressed “deep regrets and apologies” for the impact that the incident has caused on livelihoods and the environment.

The container ship X-Press Pearl was carrying 1,486 containers, including 25 tonnes of nitric acid, when it caught fire on May 20 off the west coast of Sri Lanka. It burned for 13 days before the blaze was finally put out on Tuesday.

Strong winds and rough seas hampered the combined effort by responders to contain the blaze aboard the Singaporean flagged container vessel MV X-Press Pearl in the anchorage off Colombo yesterday, as the Indian Government dispatched Coast Guard ships and aircraft to assist following a request by the Sri Lanka Navy.

According to the Navy Spokesman Capt Indika De Silva, the fire that

Byakko on sea trails in 2020 (Prince Kaiun Co.)

PUBLISHED MAY 28, 2021 2:55 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

The Japanese Coast Guard is searching for survivors after a ro-ro cargo ship collided with a chemical tanker and sunk in the Kurushima Strait in southern Japan. Nine crewmembers from the cargo ship have been rescued but the captain, first engineer, and second engineer remain missing.

The Japanese ro-ro Byakko, owned by the Prince Kaiun Co., departed Kobe on the afternoon of May 27 heading north for the port of Kanda. The 6,800 dwt vessel was less than a year old built to operate in coastal waters carrying up to 800 commercial vehicles and trailers. There was a crew of 12 aboard.

Containers piled high on giant vessels carrying everything from car tires to smartphones are toppling over at an alarming rate, sending millions of dollars of cargo sinking to the bottom of the ocean as pressure to speed deliveries raises the risk of safety errors.

The shipping industry is seeing the biggest spike in lost containers in seven years. More than 3,000 boxes dropped into the sea last year, and more than 1,000 have fallen overboard so far in 2021. The accidents are disrupting supply chains for hundreds of U.S. retailers and manufacturers such as Amazon and Tesla.

There are a host of reasons for the sudden rise in accidents. Weather is getting more unpredictable, while ships are
