(Article originally published in May/June 2022 edition.)

New megatrends in naval architecture are reinvigorating the industry with a focus on decarbonization (reducing emissions) and digitalization (optimization of operations). These megatrends are substantively complementary and referred to by many as "two sides of the same coin."

Driven by technology, regulation, sustainable investing and even space travel, countless projects are under way. Here’s a small sampling of some of the more exciting activities.

Dutch researchers are exploring three concepts to stop drifting ships from colliding with wind turbines (MARIN)

PUBLISHED MAR 18, 2022 6:46 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE

A team of Dutch maritime researchers is working on solutions to avoid collisions between ships and the growing number of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea. According to the team, the risk of a collision is growing rapidly as the number of wind turbines expands and they believe that they have identified several promising “crash barrier” methods to reduce the risks associated with a collision similar to one that occurred earlier this year.

“The accident involving the Julietta D shows the real dangers posed by vessels adrift,” says MARIN’s Traffic & Safety team leader Yvonne Koldenhof. “Even with current resources, it’s difficult

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will convene a special meeting next week to discuss the risks to seafarers and ships in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UN’s shipping agency said on Friday.

Over 15 countries earlier this week called for an IMO meeting as concerns grow for the safety of ships and their crews amid ships being damaged by projectiles.

Many shipping firms have suspended sailings to affected Black Sea ports and other terminals in Ukraine. Insurance premiums for voyages have soared since Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, an action Moscow calls a “special operation”.

An Estonian-owned cargo ship sank on Thursday off Ukraine’s major Black Sea port of
