Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained near a standstill during the week, with only 10 vessel crossings recorded between March 7 and March 11, compared to a typical daily average of 70-80 crossings.
Maritime attacks intensified across the Gulf, bringing the total number of vessels struck since the start of the conflict to at least 16 ships across multiple maritime zones.
Remote Sensing Intelligence detected dark vessel presence inside the Strait, suggesting limited transit activity continues under partially visible or non-transmitting conditions.
Electronic interference expanded sharply, with more than 1,650 vessels experiencing GPS and AIS disruption across the Gulf region.
Global shipping routes continued to adjust to the disruption, with Cape of Good Hope diversion traffic remaining elevated

HORN OF AFRICA

Reports of multiple hijackings off the coast of Somalia are raising fears that piracy may be reviving after a relative lull over the past decade. Increased traffic round the Horn of Africa amid the war in the Middle East, along with the diversion of naval forces, could be creating more opportunities for pirates to strike.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — Twelve nations, including Malaysia, have condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli assault on the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters.

In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Malaysia, Turkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, South Africa, and Spain said the attacks on the vessels and the unlawful detention of humanitarian activists in international waters constitute flagrant violations of international law and international humanitarian law.

“The ministers are deeply concerned about the safety of the civilian activists and urge the Israeli authorities to take the necessary measures to ensure their immediate release,” the statement read.

The ministers also called on the international community to fulfil their moral and legal

Both Iran and the U.S. Navy are taking steps to enforce their respective blockades in the Strait of Hormuz. On Sunday, a foreign-flagged bulker reported that it was attacked while headed northbound into the strait, just off the coast of Sirik, Iran. Consultancy Vanguard Tech reports that multiple small craft approached the ship at about 1130 hours UTC; all crew were reported safe, and no environmental impact was reported.

The vessel has been identified as the Minoan Falcon, a Greek-owned bulker of about 90,000 dwt. AIS data shows that at the time of the interdiction, the ship entered just inside of Iran's 12-mile territorial sea boundary, indicating either a diversion or an intent

AL JAZEERA

Published on: 30 Apr 2026

Al Jazeera Media Network expresses its deep concern for the safety of its correspondent Hafedh Mribah and cameraman Mahmut Yavuz, who were among the journalists accompanying the “Sumud Flotilla”, intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters.

The Network holds the Israeli authorities fully responsible for the safety of its colleagues Hafedh and Mahmut, and calls on the international community to take a unified stance against Israel’s repeated violations of international law and conventions.

Israeli forces intercepted a number of vessels participating in the “Sumud Flotilla” in international waters off the coast of the Greek island of Crete, resulting in a loss of contact with Al Jazeera’s team and the journalists on board. Al Jazeera reaffirms its commitment to press freedom and calls for the protection of all journalists, and for enabling them to carry out their duties freely and without obstruction.
