HOUSTON, March 26 (Reuters) - The backlog of ships waiting to sail in or out of the Houston Ship Channel fell on Wednesday as crews cleaned a fuel oil spill in Galveston Bay, the head of the Houston Pilots said.

The U.S. Coast Guard also reduced the so-called daylight restriction, allowing ships to sail until midnight CDT (0500 GMT) before movement stops until Wednesday morning, which is expected to further reduce the backlog, Houston Pilots Capt. Clint Winegar said.

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA), General Electric Co. (GE) and a company co-founded by T. Boone Pickens are planning investments in natural-gas-powered shipping as record U.S. output spurs the merchant fleet to use a new fuel.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp., which Pickens helped start, will begin construction next year on the country’s first fuel station for cargo ships running on liquefied natural gas in Jacksonville, Florida. Shell said in March it’s planning LNG plants for the Great Lakes and Gulf Coast. GE, evaluating five locations, says the U.S. will need 50 to 100 small-scale plants for ships, trains, mining and trucks by 2025, each costing $50 million to $150 million.

“We truly believe the age of gas is

At the DIMDEX maritime defense exhibition in Qatar Rolls-Royce Power Systems is unveiling its new MTU branded genset.

The genset is based on a 6-cylinder Series 1600 inline engine delivering up to 323 kW output and compliant with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 3 regulations. The marine engine version is configured for on-board power generation and is derived from the highly robust and cost-efficient Series 1600 unit used for power generation on land.

With maintenance intervals considerably longer than average and specific fuel consumption under 205 g/kWh at full continuous power, the genset sets a new standard in terms of low overall running costs. The genset engine is also highly versatile, and meets not only classification society regulations in
