Greek shipping embarked on a multi-billion dollar Christmas / New Year splurge. Though we are only a couple of weeks into the year, Greek shipowners have already confirmed financial dealings topping $6bn.

Since the beginning of the holiday break it has already come to light over a score of owners have reached agreements to raise funds in the equity markets and through traditional ship financing, as well as invest in new and secondhand tonnage. The total amount involved… over $5.88bn.

The biggest slice of the investment involves the Peter Georgiopoulos-chaired General Maritime (Genmar), the Costis Constantakopoulos-led Costamare and Peter Livanos-led GasLog. The three have committed some $2.79bn.

Since the new year it has been revealed some $2.14bn has been raised

Following the results of the general election on 25 January, Greek shipowners are waiting calmly for the new government led by the left-wing anti-austerity party Syriza to announce its policies on the shipping sector.

The new administration is expected to end the autonomy of the shipping ministry as Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras promised a very small cabinet of 10 ministries, which would mean the merging of several portfolios including that of shipping.

Agentes del Servicio de Vigilancia Aduanera de la Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) han interceptado en aguas de la localidad murciana de Cartagena una embarcación italiana que portaba unos 8.700 kilos de resina de hachís, con un valor de 13,6 millones de euros en el mercado ilícito, y ha detenido a los 8 tripulantes del buque en una operación denominada 'Ramsés'.

Pieter Schelte, el buque más ancho del mundo diseñado para transportar plataformas petrolíferas, entrará en servicio en el año 2015.

El buque Pieter Schelte, de la empresa suiza Allseas, es actualmente el barco más ancho del mundo (124 metros de manga), según los datos publicados en el sitio oficial de la compañía.
 
El Pieter Schelte se utilizará para la instalación y desmantelamiento de plataformas petrolíferas. Actualmente la nave está en proceso de construcción en los astilleros surcoreanos de Daewoo. La construcción concluirá en los Países Bajos. Según informa la empresa, Pieter Schelte entrará en servicio en 2015.
