Seafarers’ mental health and wellbeing
What’s the problem?
In the context of growing concerns about mental health and wellbeing at work, this research set out to explore mental health and wellbeing among seafarers working in the international cargo shipping industry. To investigate the nature and extent of the issue we commissioned Helen Sampson and Neil Ellis from the Seafarers International Research Centre. Seafarers working in the contemporary international cargo shipping sector tend to work as part of small crews made up of people from different countries. Most work long hours and have voyage-based contracts lasting for up to 12 months at a time. Communication with families and friends ashore is subject to limitations as a consequence of a

The flat Earth model is an archaic conception of Earth's shape as a plane or disk. Many ancient cultures subscribed to a flat Earth cosmography, including Greece until the classical period, the Bronze Age and Iron Age civilizations of the Near East until the Hellenistic period, India until the Gupta period (early centuries AD), and China until the 17th century.
The idea of a spherical Earth appeared in Greek philosophy with Pythagoras (6th century BC), although most pre-Socratics (6th–5th century BC) retained the flat Earth model. In the early fourth century BC Plato wrote about a spherical Earth, and by about 330 BC his former student Aristotle provided evidence for the spherical shape of the Earth on empirical grounds. Knowledge of the spherical Earth gradually began

n geography, latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north–south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle (defined below) which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° (North or South) at the poles. Lines of constant latitude, or parallels, run east–west as circles parallel to the equator. Latitude is used together with longitude to specify the precise location of features on the surface of the Earth. On its own, the term latitude should be taken to be the geodetic latitude as defined below. Briefly, geodetic latitude at a point is the angle formed by the vector perpendicular (or normal) to the ellipsoidal surface from that point, and the equatorial plane. Also defined are six auxiliary latitudes which are used in special applications.
