Deadly attack on tug assisting abandoned container ship in Strait of Hormuz

A UAE-registered tug trying to assist the stricken Safeen Prestige reported hit by missiles killing at least four crew

The UKMTO said a tugboat being hit by unknown projectiles while conducting operations with the stranded container ship Safeen Prestige 6nm north of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz.
Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech that a UAE-flagged tug Mussafah 2 was struck by two missiles while attempting to assist the abandoned container ship Safeen Prestige.
Reports indicate some or all of the crew of the Mussafah 2 were killed in the attack. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at least four seafarers on board the tug were killed and three severely injured.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez condemned the attack. “I am alarmed and deeply saddened to hear of a deadly attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on 6 March 2026, in which at least four seafarers have reportedly lost their lives and three severely injured.
"My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected, as well as the global maritime community mourning these losses."
The Malta-registered Safeen Prestige has been adrift since 4 March when it was after it was struck above the waterline at the vessel’s stern causing a fire in the engine room. The feeder ship’s crew abandoned the vessel and were safe and uninjured following the attack.
According to Equasis the Mussafah 2 is managed Abu Dhabi Marine Serv Safeen and owned by Abu Dhabi Ports. Safeen is the marine services brand of Abu Dhabi Ports and also runs regional container carrier Safeen Feeders.
The 1,740 teu Safeen Prestige is owned by Transmar International Shipping of Abu Dhabi.
