External firefighting crews have boarded the Marie Maersk and are working alongside the vessel’s crew to combat a container fire that broke out on 13 August, Maersk confirmed on 20 August.

The incident began on August 13, when the Danish-flagged containership reported smoke coming from containers while en route from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. The vessel diverted toward the Liberian coast to allow support vessels to reach it.

Following the fire’s outbreak, the crew worked to prevent the flames from spreading, using onboard firefighting systems and implementing safety protocols to secure the ship. Their efforts, combined with the arrival of external support, have stabilized the situation and limited further escalation. Three tugboats and an offshore supply vessel equipped with firefighting gear have since joined the effort.

Maersk reported that the crew remains safe and the ship is in stable condition, with all propulsion, steering, and navigational systems operational. The company is in constant communication with the crew and continues to assess the next steps, including the selection of a suitable port of refuge where landside support can be secured.

The full impact on cargo is still unknown.
