Global engineering group Cavotec has today announced port equipment orders worth EUR10 million, including five from Chinese crane manufacturing giant ZPMC.
Of those, the biggest is for cable reels that will supply electrical power to 72 ZPMC automated stacking cranes at Singapore's newest terminal, Pasir Panjang. Cavotec is also providing 28 spreader cable reels for ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes at the same facility.
The other three orders are for:
Power and spreader cable reels for four ZPMC STS cranes for PSA International. Destined for the Port of Genoa in Italy, the country's largest port by cargo volume and second largest by teu throughput - they will be the largest reels ever manufactured by Cavotec Specimas, one of Cavotec's eight worldwide 'Centres of Excellence'
Also for PSA International, the company is to supply gantry reels for eight electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) for the port of Mersin, Turkey's largest port
In addition, three gantry reels and three spreader reels for three ZPMC STS cranes ordered by shipping group MSC's terminal-operating division TIL and destined for the port of Lomé in Togo.
Speaking to IHS Maritime, Cavotec corporate communications group director Michael Scheepers commented, "We have always worked closely with leading equipment manufacturers, thanks to our local approach with our global network of sales and service companies. We are committed to continuing and further strengthening these successful partnerships in the years ahead."
In addition to the ZPMC contracts, Cavotec has won orders to supply cable equipment for 11 automated Konecranes RTGs for Indonesian port company Pelindo, which has also ordered motorised cable reels for five STS container cranes. Crane manufacturer Kalmar is also buying motorised cable reels; eight sets for three separate applications.
Cable reels, hose reels and related equipment have been bought by OEM Tenova Takraf in Australia. They will be installed on three off-coal stacker machines at the Port of Kembla in New South Wales.
As Scheepers explained to IHS Maritime, the company also manufactures alternative maritime power systems (AMP - sometimes known as 'cold ironing'). "We've seen growing interest in our AMP solutions - fixed, mobile and ship-based, low and medium voltage - from customers in the North America, Europe and the Far East," he said. "As part of the EUR10 million order package, we've won two separate orders from a European shipowner - one for six AMP reels for fixed installations, the other for AMPTainer equipment.
"AMPTainer units are containerised shore power solutions that enable the connection of vessels to electrical power. They've proven very popular as they minimise [the] modification work required on vessels to accommodate shore power equipment.
"We've also recently been awarded an order [to provide] a variety of AMP equipment for a Greek ship owner," Scheepers added.
Cavotec CEO Ottonel Popesco concluded, "These orders highlight the degree of co-operation Cavotec enjoys with equipment manufacturers, and the world's largest port operators, as a preferred supplier of a variety of innovative, mission-critical systems".
