Multi-mission sonar for new research vessel

iXBlue’s SAM-DT 6000 synthetic aperture mapping sonar currently being installed aboard a new survey

Underwater positioning specialist iXBlue is to install its latest SAMS-DT 6000 deep tow synthetic aperture mapping sonar aboard a new survey ship currently being completed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea for delivery to the Geological Survey of India (GSI) this September.

The French company says the GSI will be the first organisation to benefit from a deepsea platform which includes not only the new sonar but also its “cutting-edge” fibre optic-based inertial navigation system, Phins6000, together with an ultra-deep, long range Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) subsea positioning system, Posidonia II. The complete 6,000m depth rated multi-mission assembly, it adds, will enable the GSI to extend its activities to include marine mineral resources exploration beyond India’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Other likely activities include search and recovery operations.
