International efforts to solve piracy often focus on displays of force. Whether it is the United States-led Task Force 151 in the Gulf of Aden or international operations in the Strait of Malacca, states most often revert to military or law enforcement to end piracy.

Force is not the ultimate answer. While states should certainly keep up efforts to apprehend pirates, security threats from piracy are just a symptom. The cause is inherently an economic problem.

The current peak of piracy and maritime armed robbery off Indonesia (the former outside territorial waters, the latter within) is a prime example of the economic problems at hand. Between January and September

Many foreign navies help reduce Somalia piracy in 2014: experts

 

by Njoroge Kaburo NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Global efforts to combat piracy in the Horn of Africa region have helped in reducing piracy in 2014, including cooperation amongst the navies operating in the region.

Three years ago, senior naval officers said Somali pirates had created a lucrative business thriving as a result of the lawlessness inside the war-torn Horn of Africa nation, which had proved to be the greatest threat to international peace and regional trade.

The spate of hijackings along the volatile coastline had made maritime experts to consider a raft of radical measures, including a total ban on the use of the East Africa coastline, especially the Gulf of Eden, in

Attacks soar in Asian seas as pirates bare their fangs Jermyn Chow, The Strait Times/ANN, Singapore

Piracy in Asian waters has hit its highest levels this year since a piracy watch centre started keeping tabs in 2006.

There have been 169 actual or attempted sea attacks reported so far this year, predominantly in Indonesia, the South China Sea, the Strait of Malacca and Strait of Singapore, according to the ReCAAP Information-Sharing Centre.
