A maritime heritage conference dedicated to preserving wooden boat building skills for future generations will be hosted in Falmouth this autumn.
Marine businesses, job seekers, education professionals and volunteers with an interest in the industry are invited to attend the free event at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall (NMMC) on Thursday October 23, from 10am to 1pm.
The conference is being hosted by Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) as part of an Interreg 2 Seas EU scheme called Maritime Heritage Skills. The project aims to pass on traditional skills which are recognised as being of regional economic and cultural importance, but are at risk of being lost due to an aging workforce.
The Maritime Heritage Skills conference will include presentations, interactive workshops and the launch of a unique new suite of online boat building training tools.
Guest speakers include the NMMC’s new director Richard Doughty, previously responsible for the restoration of the Cutty Sark.

Fue durante toda su vida marino civil, si bien en algunas ocasiones actuó como corsario y llegó a ser almirante de alguna de las Armadas al servicio de la Corona.

He was called “the half man”, but he was able to humiliate the most powerful fleet of the time on his own. However, it was not until recently that Blas de Lezo, a sailor from guipuzcoano, has been remembered: biographies, exhibitions and even a proposed monument in his memory have brought him back to life.
