Denmark’s Copenhagen Airports, A.P. Moller – Maersk, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, SAS, and Ørsted have formed a partnership to develop a hydrogen and e-fuel production facility powered by offshore wind.

The project will require a large-scale supply of renewable electricity, which could potentially come from offshore wind power produced at Rønne Banke off the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, the developers said.

The project is divided into three stages. The first stage, which could be operational by 2023, comprises a 10 MW electrolyser which can produce renewable hydrogen used directly to fuel buses and trucks.

Stage two comprises a 250 MW electrolyser facility which could be operational by 2027 when the first offshore wind power from

Established Electric Power and Propulsion Systems Transfer to a Variety of Vessels

US – WORLDWIDE – With the world suddenly aware of how dramatic a change can be achieved in air quality with reduced emissions due to traffic levels having dropped during the lockdown, the continued push for electrification on the roads is assured, and now those technologies already established are being seen on the water as well.

BAE Systems has installed its electric power and propulsion systems core technology in more than 12,000 buses around the world in cities such as Boston, New York, Paris, and San Francisco for more than 20 years. Now it has evolved its HybriGen® to take that expertise to the shipyard, helping operators make the switch from

The technology group Wärtsilä has been contracted by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC), a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Company (KPC), to retrofit main engines on four very large carriers (VLCCs) with the Wärtsilä Fuel Efficiency Boost solution.

Wärtsilä said that the modification will reduce fuel consumption, and correspondingly lessen the environmental impact of the vessels’ operation by lowering greenhouse gas emission levels. The company won the order in the first quarter of 2020.

The Wärtsilä solution is based on two-stroke engine optimisation technology for selected Wärtsilä RT-flex and earlier deliveries of X-type two-stroke engines. The four KOTC very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to be retrofitted operate with 7-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex82T two-stroke main engines.

The retrofitting of the
